Governor Cuomo Announces Launch of Shift Program in Buffalo

By December 20, 2017 News

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced Buffalo Manufacturing Works operated by Edison Welding Institute, Inc., Inyste Consulting and Next Street have launched a new program developed specifically for small and medium-sized manufacturers in Western New York called Shift. Shift will help these manufacturers in the region to identify and implement mission critical technology to better operate, compete and grow. Shift was funded through Buffalo Billion Phase II funding to broaden and deepen a long-term impact on Buffalo-Niagara’s manufacturing competitiveness.

“We’re making strategic investments today to foster future economic opportunities and job creation across Western New York,” Governor Cuomo said. “By promoting innovation and new technologies Buffalo Manufacturing Works is improving manufacturing competitiveness sector-wide and bringing more good-paying, sustainable jobs to the region. The launch of this program is one more reason why Buffalo is a city on the move.”

“As a Western New Yorker, I am proud of this administration’s accomplishments rebuilding this region, which is evidenced by the many ribbon-cuttings and grand-openings I have taken part in over the past few years,” Lieutenant Governor Hochul said. “Governor Cuomo’s commitment to programs like Shift provide manufacturing businesses the assistance they need to compete and grow, paving the way for them to expand operations and employ more people. This is just one more way that we are fueling economic growth through Buffalo Billion II.”

Shift will provide a necessary first step for manufacturers who recognize they need to innovate to stay competitive but are unsure of where to start. The program will provide unparalleled expertise to guide leadership through the necessary steps in the program. It is anticipated that Shift will impact 250 small and medium sized manufacturers over the next three years.

President, CEO and Commissioner of Empire State Development Howard Zemsky said, “Buffalo Manufacturing Works is a key part of Governor Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion initiative, providing crucial services to businesses working to solve manufacturing and production issues and develop and implement leading-edge manufacturing technologies that improve product performance, quality, reliability, and cost competitiveness.”

Senator Tim Kennedy said, “Buffalo Manufacturing Works is becoming an essential tool for local manufacturers. The consulting services provided with BMW’s new Shift program will result in more efficient manufacturing processes, which will enable companies to expand and hire more employees. “

Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes said, “Through the new Shift program, Buffalo Manufacturing Works is providing important industry specific information such as material testing and 3-D printing to medium and small manufacturers. I applaud Governor Cuomo for his continued efforts on growing our regional economy by creating partnerships between industry and workforce development.”

City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said, “Since Buffalo Manufacturing Works was created in 2015, it has provided several of our area’s larger manufacturers, such as Moog, Inc., with the support they need to expand into new markets and boost productivity. Through the new Shift program, small and medium manufacturing companies will be able to take advantage of that same expertise leading to lower costs, improved productivity, and better trained employees—all essentials for future development. It’s also exciting that Buffalo Manufacturing Works will be relocating from its current downtown site to the new Northland Corridor training and manufacturing campus in the summer of 2019. This is a win-win for the more than $70 million Northland project, and for small and mid-sized Buffalo manufacturers.”

Shift Program Director Elizabeth Callahan said, “The first step in Shift is to provide an Innovation Scorecard and from there we offer customized workshops to build the skills to make necessary innovation updates in step two. Participants who move on to the third step will receive an on-site review with specialized engineers and the final step is one-on-one consulting with the team at Buffalo Manufacturing Works to implement an innovation plan.”

President of Buffalo Manufacturing Works Michael Ulbrich said, “Shift is all about access. We often hear that manufacturers in Western New York want to innovate but don’t know where to start, this is the place to start. Shift will provide these manufacturers with a competitive advantage to help them grow and compete.”

President of Insyte Consulting Ben Rand said, “This is a true collaborative effort. By combining the expertise of Buffalo Manufacturing Works, Insyte Consulting and Next Street, local manufacturers will have the opportunity to tap into best-in-class knowledge. Manufacturing is still the backbone of our region, providing more than 60,000 jobs in WNY and contributing over $8.3 billion in gross domestic in gross domestic product in Buffalo-Niagara.”

CEO of Next Street Marina Linhart said, “Shift is going to fill a critical need in the manufacturing landscape in Western New York. The program will build innovation capacity relative to industry standards and regional peers, allowing companies to measure and manage their business while also collecting critical economic development and business data.”

Manufacturers ready to get started can sign up to participate in Shift today. There is no cost to participate in the program. For more information, visit
