Happy International Women’s Day!
Women entrepreneurs play an essential role in New York City’s economic ecosystem. However, men have historically owned 1.5 times more businesses, employed 3.5 times more people, and generated 4.5 times more revenue. This gap is even wider among women in low income and immigrant communities. In an effort to help all women entrepreneurs successfully start and grow their businesses, the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) launched the WE NYC (Women Entrepreneurs NYC) initiative in March 2015. WE NYC aims to connect women entrepreneurs – specifically those from underserved communities – with the resources, education, and connections needed to thrive. Since its inception, WE NYC has developed a portfolio of programs built to serve four major needs of women entrepreneurs – information, business skills, mentorship and networking, and capital.
In response to WE NYC’s programmatic needs, Next Street independently developed a first-of-its kind interactive workshop – WE Master Leadership, a twelve-hour course intended to equip women entrepreneurs with critical business leadership and management skills such as negotiation, communication, and collaboration. So far, the workshops have been warmly received – since the launch of WE Master Leadership in 2016 – Next Street has served nearly 550 women entrepreneurs through over 30 workshops held throughout New York City and conducted in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.
