Last month, Next Street attended the Mission Investors Exchange 2018 National Conference – Mission Forward! The conference, held every other year, brings together leaders in philanthropy to share best practices in impact investing, learn about new innovations, and brainstorm ideas for the future of the field. This year’s conference themes focused on pushing boundaries of scale, driving innovation, building partnerships beyond philanthropy, and raising the bar for equity and impact.
We were delighted to see the increased focus on place-based investing and small business. For example, at the conference, Urban Institute announced the release of their latest report, Investing Together: Emerging Approaches in Collaborative Place-Based Impact Investing. The report serves as an evidence-based toolkit to inform the practice of place-based impact investing, with a focus on the roles of foundations and collaborative models.
These themes continued after the sessions were over: Next Street hosted a dinner with Community Foundation leaders from across the country where we discussed the unique challenges faced by placed-based foundations in impact investing. We shared our experience connecting the dots between place-based Foundations and CDFIs (see our CDFI interview series here) and brainstormed ideas ranging from educating donors to new platforms to deploy place-based impact capital at scale. Thank you to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and Bert Feuss for helping to organize and facilitate a rich discussion.
Best of luck to all as you deploy more money to mission!
